Talismans of Warding are the classic, fairy-tale type of talismans that are used to ward an individual from a particular kind of Animal, Magical Animal, Beast, or Magical Beast.  These talismans are typically made by reclusive individuals to protect themselves or their charges from dangerous creatures.

See the sections below for an example of a Talisman of Warding and also some guidelines for other variations.

Peryton Talisman
(Talisman of Warding: Perytons)

The Peryton Talisman is a simple, shamantic-looking amulet.  It features a large Peryton's claw polished to a high shine on a leather shark-skin thong.  The thong is attached to a finely woven leather cord made of thin strips of shark skin and shiny blue-black pieces of Peryton feathers.  The Talisman is worn about the neck.

The Peryton Talisman creates a magical barrier around the wearer at a distance of 1 foot, preventing bodily contact by Perytons.  This causes the natural weapon attacks of Perytons to fail and the creatures to recoil from touching the warded creature.  The protection against contact by Perytons ends if the warded creature makes a melee attack against, or tries to force the barrier against, the Peryton.  In any event, the Peryton will not take the heart of a person wearing the Peryton Talisman.

The Peryton Talisman was created by the wizardess Amarra Kedalia to protect a sailor from Peryton attacks after he nearly died when a mated pair attacked the ship on which they were traveling.  This was the first time Amarra witnessed an attack on an innocent person, and it left an enduring impression.  When they reached their destination of Aleria, a country populated mainly by halflings, Amarra hired Pansy Fastfingers, the master leatherworker, to create the Talisman.  Amarra enchanted it herself.
